Bioinorganic Laboratory

We ask a fundamental question: How does the protein environment encode the identity, structure, dynamics, and reactivity of a metal cofactor beyond the first coordination sphere?

Our research seeks to understand the chemical principles by which metalloenzymes emerge and evolve through the intricate orchestration of inorganic elements within protein environments. To uncover these principles, we discover new metalloenzymes, elucidate their functions and mechanisms, and use the resulting insights to design artificial metalloproteins for applications in biocatalysis, biomaterials, and therapeutics.
